Preparation & Notes
Draw blood in a green top(sodium heparin) tube(s), and send 5.0 mL (pediatric: 2.0 mL) of whole blood. A total of 5.0-10 mL (pediatric:2.0-5.0 mL) is typically sufficient for chromosome analysis as well as fluorescent in situ hybridization studies. Invert several times to mix blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed blood will be rejected). Other anticoagulants used other than sodium heparin will be rejected as they are harmful to the viability of the cells. Label vial with the patient as name, and laboratory control number. Send specimen with the refrigerated pack-not frozen pack, specimen cannot be frozen.
