Preparation & Notes

Submit only 1 of the following. Preferred: Specimen Required For Hematologic Disorders, Bone Marrow: Obtain 1.0-2.0 mL (pediatric: 1.0 mL) of bone marrow in a green top(sodium heparin) tube(s). Invert several times to mix bone marrow. (Clotted bone marrow will be rejected). Other anticoagulants used other than sodium heparin will be rejected as they are harmful to the viability of the cells. Label vial with patient's name, and laboratory control number. Send specimen with the refrigerated pack-not frozen pack, specimen cannot be frozen. Or send 2 unstained bone marrow smears slides. Alternate: "Submit only 1 of the following. Preferred: Specimen Required For Hematologic Disorders, Bone Marrow: Obtain 1.0-2.0 mL (pediatric: 1.0 mL) of bone marrow in a green top(sodium heparin) tube(s). Alternate: Specimen Required For Hematologic Disorders, Blood: Draw blood in a green top(sodium heparin) tube(s), and send 5.0 mL (pediatric: 2.0 mL) of whole blood. A total of 5.0-10 mL (pediatric:2.0-5.0 mL) is typically sufficient for chromosome analysis as well as fluorescent in situ hybridization studies. Invert several times to mix blood. (Clotted or hemolyzed blood will be rejected). Other anticoagulants used other than sodium heparin will be rejected as they are harmful to the viability of the cells. Label vial with patient's name, and laboratory control number. Send specimen with the refrigerated pack-not frozen pack, the specimen cannot be frozen."
