10 mL from random urine collection. (Minimum required: 5 mL) Keep urine refrigerated. No preservative./ Screening test useful in monitoring the effectiveness of dietary therapy of PKU patients. PKU (Phenylketonuria), the most well-known aminoacidurias, if undetected, results in severe mental retardation. PKU is caused by failure to inherit the gene to produce the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. Many drugs give false-positive results.
