Preparation & Notes

"The following must accompany the sample or it will be rejected 1. Complete clinical history and diagnosis or morphological suspicious should be provided 2. The volume of fluid necessary to phenotype the lymphocytes or blasts in serous effusions depends upon the cell count in the specimen. Usually, 20 ml of pleural or peritoneal fluid is sufficient. Smaller volumes can be used if there is a high cell count. If possible, the fluids other than spinal fluid should be anticoagulated with heparin (1 U/ml). 3. Spinal fluid requires at least 2 ml to perform this test. Samples with a count of WBC <5 cells/ul will not be accepted. 4. One unstained and one stained cytospin must be included. 5. Body fluid/spinal fluid differential should be included 6. Specimen must arrive in the lab within 24 hours at 20-25C. sample must be in the flow cytometry lab by 02:00 PM. Any sample that arrives after this time will be rejected." Note: Upon arrival, the pathologist will review the stained smears, and decide whether to proceed with or cancel the test. If morphological review revealed no abnormal cells, the test will be canceled and the reference lab will be notified of the reason for the cancellation
