Preparation & Notes

5.0 mL from a 24-hour urine collection. Add 25 mL of 50% acetic acid as a preservative at the start of the collection. If the specimen is collected refrigerated, preservatives may be added up to 4 hours after collection. Use 15 mL of 50% acetic acid for children <5 years old. This preservative is intended to achieve a pH of between approximately 1.0 and 5.0. If necessary, adjust urine pH to 1.0 to 5.0 with 50% acetic or HCI acid. See "Urine Preservatives" in Special Instructions for multiple collections. Send specimen refrigerated in a plastic, 13-mL urine tube. For pediatric patients only (14 years of age or younger), adjust random urine pH to 1.0 to 5.0 with 50% acetic, nitric, or HCI acid. Send specimen frozen in a plastic, 13-mL urine tube.
